Experts in diverse and unique leaded and faceted windows,we will serve your needs
in creating, restoring, and preserving
your stained glass heritage.
Restoration/repair of your windows is the first priority at Stained Glass by Shenandoah.
We believe the windows should be brought back as much as possible to their original beauty
and strength (in the instance of steel braces, perhaps even greater strength). In fact, it
is an SGS policy
not to offer protection and/or insulation services unless
preceded by needed restoration and/or repair. Restoration includes (but is not limited to):
- Reducing bulges and installing new steel braces for strength
- Restoring cracked stained and/or painted/fired glass
- Recementing the exterior surface of the windows to restore structural strength
and forestall the developement of bulges
Bulges are the most serious sort of structural defect in leaded glass windows.
They are caused by great pressure over time (due to weight, usually) and constant
exposure to the elements. Wind, rain, snow, and temperature shifts cause the deterioration
of the cement that holds the glass in the lead. After bulges have developed, it is absolutely
necessary to strengthen them or they will continue to crack and eventually break entirely.
Repairing a window that is bulging or has just started to bulge costs about
twenty times
less then repairing a window that has been or is falling apart. Bulges will only get worse with
time and the longer they remain unchecked, the greater the chance your whole window could
be
destroyed.
Glass Replacement is one of the most difficult tasks involved in stained glass repair,
because matching is not a perfect science. It is a general rule to only replace a piece of
stained glass if it has at least two cracks and if it can be closely matched. The Shenandoah
Master Craftsman working with the matching process closely will advise you when replacement
pieces are required.
Painted/Fired Glass now can be duplicated with a reasonable assurance of excellent matching,
including replication of the fade on bordering pieces of painted/fired glass. Our Shenandoah
Restoration Artists are able to replicate the style of other artists and other eras.
Millwork - One item that an exact price cannot be quoted in advance of the Shenandoag Master
Crew's arrival is the millwork (rotten or damaged woodwork related to the stained glass frame). If
repair is needed, the Shenandoag Master Craftsman will notify the church's representative for an
inspection of damages and to discuss options. Once its determined the extent of the repairs, the
Master Craftsman will provide the church an exact estimate of millwork repair costs for approval.
With "Stained Glass by Shenandoah," your establishment receives the absolute
finest and most beautiful protection and insulation. With our installation
of a 1.25" tempered "E-Glass," the establishment will receive a substantial level
of protection from stained glass breakage (although, as with any glass, tempered
"E-Glass" cannot be gauranteed to entirely prevent all possibility of breakage)
due to vandalism or accidents, elimination of water leakage, reduction of noise
coming from outside sources, and possibly reduced insurance rates due to stability
and the rarity of required repair.
Also, with an air-tight SGS installation, the energy saved and conserved will be
greatly increased. This is done by installing the protective layer with a space
between the "E-Glass" and the stained glass, minimizing convection currents (the
transfer of heat energy) between the panes of glass.
An anodized aluminum frame can be fabricated around the perimeter of the stained
glass window frame and anchored to create a permanent protective cover. Once the
tempered "E-Glass" is placed in the frame and sealed by a water-tight silicone-based
sealant, the installation will be the finest possible.
